Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT)
Hormone Replacement Therapy is the
process of replacing necessary hormones that the body may not be producing well
enough on its own. Synthetic hormones are not found in humans, and are not
identical in structure or function to the bio-identical hormones they are
intended to replace. Bio-identical Hormone Replacement refers to a hormone
whose molecular structure is identical to the one that human beings make in
their bodies and may be beneficial to both men and women.

The Bio-Identical Hormones consist of DHEA, estrogen, pregnenolone, progesterone
and testosterone.
DHEA-Dehydroepiandrosterone is the most prolific hormone
produced by the adrenal glands and restoring it to normal levels may help
increase estrogen and testosterone levels. Supplementation may restore energy,
improve immune function, lift depression and improve mental function.
Estrogens found in BHRT consist of three components: Estrone
(10-20%) Estradiol (10-20%) and Estriol (60-80%) thought to be
anti-carcinogenic. Estrogen is responsible for the promotion and growth of
specific cells in the body and for the development of most secondary sexual
characteristic of the female. Estrogens also help to slow bone loss.
Pregnenolone is made from cholesterol in the body and is a
“precursor” for the production of all the human steroid hormones. It is often
referred to as the balancing hormone and may help adjust other hormone levels
to a more normal state. Pregnenolone production decreases with aging, stress,
depression and hypothyroidism. It may help improve mood, increase energy, help
with joint pain and improve memory.
Progesterone
balances estrogen’s tendency to induce excessive growth in the lining
of the uterus. It also can build new bone tissue which increases bone mass and
density. When combined with estrogen therapy, HDL-cholesterol levels are
raised. It also has natural calming and diuretic effects. Progesterone is
important for women, but it may also help in men for the maintenance of
prostate health.
Testosterone can improve mental alertness, make bones stronger
and revive a lagging sex life in both men and women. In women, hot flashes that
have not responded to estrogen alone may improve as well as breast tenderness.
Lean body mass, skin elasticity and cardiovascular health in both sexes can
improve with normal levels of testosterone.
Bio-identical hormones should be a replacement of levels when you were
functioning at your physical peak.
