Ways to Fight Infection
Many patients and healthcare professionals are concerned about the shortage of
flu vaccine, and are searching for other ways to decrease the risk of
infection. We recommend proper nutritional support to strengthen the immune
system and anti-infective preparations to treat infections that do occur.
Naturally-occurring substances such as zinc, vitamin C, and the glucose
derivative 2-Deoxy-D-Glucose have anti-viral properties, and can be used to
shorten the duration of cold symptoms. Xylitol has anti-microbial properties
and can be formulated as a nasal spray to help fight Staph infections.
Xylitol syrup or chewing gum has also been found to be useful in the treatment
of otitis media. Echinacea has antimicrobial activity and boosts immune-cell
function. A preparation containing echinacea, propolis, and vitamin C was shown
to reduce the number and duration of respiratory infections in children aged 1
to 5 years. Coenzyme Q10 (Co-Q10) is an important immune-system supporter.
Co-Q10 may compensate for immune deficiencies caused by aging or disease.
Ask our compounding professionals about lip balms, oral rinses,
lozenges, and other dosage forms to reduce the incidence or relieve
symptoms of infection.
