Signs of Otitis Media (Middle Ear Infection) in Pets

Otitis media can cause inflammation and pain within the fluid-filled area known as the bulla, next to the temporomandibular joint, and may also affect the nerves that surround the ear. Keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS, eye dryness), loss of ability to close the eyelid, head tilt, drooped ear, or drooped lip may result. Pets with otitis media may be reluctant to chew hard food or have their mouths opened. Because the facial nerve courses in and around the ear canal, it is easily affected by swelling and trauma caused when an animal scratches the base of an infected ear. This can lead to some loss of control of the facial muscles and drooling. Progression to inner ear infection can result irregular movement of the eyeballs or circling behavior. If your pet begins to exhibit any of these signs or symptoms of otitis, you should schedule an appointment with your veterinarian.
